Google sued by the US Department of Justice for alleged monopoly
The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced an antitrust lawsuit against Google. It is accused of taking illegal monopolies in the Internet search and search advertising market to maintain market dominance. This is since the US Department of Justice sued Microsoft in 1998 for monopolizing the software market.A large-scale antitrust lawsuit initiated again against technology companies.
The US Department of Justice alleged in the indictment thatFor many years, Google “used anti-competitive measures to maintain and expand its monopoly position in markets such as general search services, search ads and general search text ads.”Google pays billions of dollars to companies such as Apple and AT&T each year.To ensure that its search engine has the default setting status among billions of electronic devices worldwide,And users rarely change the default settings,This is actually tantamount to blocking a competitor’s search engine. In addition,Google also agreed to “share” part of its advertising revenue with distributors and operators who set Google as the default search engine. This part of the amount is as high as 40 billion US dollars per year.
Google’s Chief Legal Officer Volcker issued a statement saying,This lawsuit has “serious flaws”,And said that people use Google because they choose to do so,Instead of being forced or unable to find alternatives. He claimed that “this lawsuit will not help consumers in any way.in contrast,It will artificially support low-quality search alternatives,Increase the price of mobile phones,Make it harder for people to get the search service they want to use”.
Related data shows,Google handles 95% of mobile phone search queries in the United States. In terms of desktop search,Google’s market share is 81%,In 2019, Google’s search business revenue was approximately US$98 billion.According to the Wall Street Journal,Google’s total advertising revenue in 2019 is close to $135 billion. It accounts for about 1/3 of global digital advertising revenue.
Last July,The US Department of Justice announced a large-scale antitrust investigation against companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon.Previously,The US Federal Trade Commission conducted an investigation into Google’s search business. The survey ended in 2013,No misconduct was found at that time. But in recent years,Google has been repeatedly fined by the European Union for its business practices.
Kimmelman, a former senior antitrust official of the U.S. Department of Justice, said,If the lawsuit is successful,May cause part of Google’s business to be split into separate companies,For example, browser business and Android mobile phone business.Kimmelman thought,The actions of the US Department of Justice may bring new legal and regulatory challenges to large technology companies.
